JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Laboratory Technician I
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for the performance of patient laboratory testing including but not limited to; blood collection, processing, and reporting of test results. Duties include but are not limited to pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical duties as described in clinic manual.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.
EDUCATION: High school diploma is required. Graduation from a recognized training facility for medical assistants, phlebotomist, or laboratory technician is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year work experience in a laboratory, preferably in a medical practice setting.

ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS: Combination of medical office and exam/ procedure room settings. Work is performed in a clinical setting, resulting in exposure to communicable disease, body fluids including blood, toxic substances, ionizing radiation and other conditions common to the clinic environment.
PHYSICAL/ MENTAL DEMANDS: Works is in a clinical setting. Work frequently requires a full range of body motion including handling patients. Work involves standing, sitting, and walking for extensive periods of times. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Staff must be flexible and available to provide staffing assistance for any/ all emergency and disaster situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Complete initial training for equipment, procedures, and protocols prior to performing any testing. Continuing education may be necessary.
- Ensure the confidentiality of all patient information throughout all phases of laboratory testing.
- Perform phlebotomy by venipuncture or capillary technique, following proper protocol.
- Follow procedure protocols for running laboratory testing, including repeating and reporting of abnormal results.
- Verify any critical values by repeat analysis. Communicate critical values to the ordering physician immediately for further orders.
- Accurately document all lab results in the electronic health system and result to appropriate order.
- Provide patients with educational materials on anticoagulant use, interactions and side effects.
- Make adjustments in anticoagulant dosing in accordance with the established TCAVI protocol; once trained and competency evaluation and completed.
- Maintain patient flow in the clinical laboratory through the electronic health system; including appropriate charge entry.
- Perform and document routine daily and monthly quality controls for lab equipment and testing materials according to protocol.
- Perform and document calibration and calibration verification following established protocols.
- Perform proficiency testing as established by laboratory policy.
- Maintain adequate supply of all reagents and consumables to perform testing and quality controls.

- Knowledge of anticoagulant therapy; including uses, interactions, side effects, and risks.
- Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with providers, medical assistants, and laboratory staff.
- Knowledge of medical information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
- Familiarity with medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care.
SKILLS:
- Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation.
- Skill in preparing accurate reports concerning the results of laboratory tests.
- Skill communicating clearly with diverse publics.
- Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patient and families.
- Skills in obtaining information via computer.
- Skill with all medical/ office equipment
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
