General Summary
The Florida Legislature is seeking an experienced Network Infrastructure Engineer to help design, implement, run, and evolve a highly available enterprise network environment. This position is part of the Office of Legislative Information Technology Services (OLITS) and plays a key role in supporting mission critical legislative operations.

This position will work alongside systems, customer support, and facilities teams to maintain a secure, resilient, and scalable network spanning campus, data center, wireless, and hybrid cloud environments. This role combines hands on engineering with life-cycle modernization, operational support, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is technically strong, adaptable, and motivated to learn emerging technologies while supporting a large, production enterprise environment.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Design, implement, and support Cisco based LAN, WAN, wireless and data center networks
  • Participate in life-cycle replacement projects and deployment of new networking technologies
  • Administer and support wireless infrastructure, network access control, and network management platforms (e.g.: Cisco controllers, ISE, Catalyst/DNA Center, Meraki)
  • Configure and maintain network security systems including firewalls, VPNs, segmentation, and access controls
  • Support hybrid connectivity between on-prem infrastructure and cloud platforms (site-to-site VPNs, secure remote access, etc.)
  • Utilize monitoring and observability tools to proactively identify performance issues and support troubleshooting
  • Diagnose and resolve complex network connectivity issues across wired, wireless, and remote environment
  • Create and maintain network documentation including diagrams, standards, configurations, and change records
  • Collaborate with systems, customer support, and facilities teams on enterprise initiatives
  • Support and coordinate maintenance of network closet UPS systems and related power infrastructure, including monitoring, maintenance scheduling, and vendor support
  • Partner with Information Security teams to implement network security controls, investigate incidents, and support compliance initiatives
  • Participate in after-hours maintenance windows and on-call rotation as required
  • Maintain network device inventory, maintenance contracts, and infrastructure records
  • Communicate technical information clearly in both written and verbal form
  • Contribute to security best practices including segmentation, certificate-based authentication, and Zero Trust principles

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of enterprise switching, routing, and wireless fundamentals
  • Basic understanding of structured cabling and fiber standards
  • Solid knowledge of TCP/IP networking and common protocols/services
  • Experience with Cisco networking technologies (switching, routing, wireless, firewalls)
  • Working knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, HSRP, BGP) and VPN/NAT concepts
  • Experience troubleshooting complex network issues in production environments
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong documentation, organization, and customer service skills
  • High aptitude and willingness to learn new technologies
  • CCNA/CCNP or equivalent professional experience

Minimum Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:
  • Experience with hybrid networking (on-prem integrated with Azure or AWS)
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust networking concepts and modern VPN/MFA integrations
  • Experience with network automation or scription (Python, PowerShell, APIs, or Ansible preferred)
  • Experience with network observability or monitoring platforms
  • Experience supporting UPS or power infrastructure in network closets or data centers
  • Experience collaborating with security teams on network segmentation, incident response, or vulnerability management
  • Exposure to Linux systems administration
  • Understanding of network redundancy, failover, and high availability design
  • Advanced Cisco or security certifications
  • Strong troubleshooting methodology and root-cause analysis skills

Working Conditions:

Health and Dental Insurance

Employees have a choice of participating in the State Self Insured Plan or a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) if available in the county of residence or employment (Standard and High Deductible Investor plans are available). Full-time employees pay $30 per month for family coverage or $8.34 per month for individual coverage. Part-time employees pay premiums based on the total hours of work. For dental insurance, the Legislature offers a PPO plan that offers choice of dentist and pays from 50 to 100 percent of usual, customary, and reasonable charges. There is a $1500 maximum benefit per plan year. The Legislature pays the total premium for full-time employees and part-time employees pay premiums based on the total hours of work.

Leave Accrual Benefits

Annual Leave accrues as follows based on creditable state service:

Up to 5 years - 11 hours per month 5 to 10 years - 13 hours per month Over 10 years - 15 hours per month

Sick Leave accrues at 9 hours per month for all full-time employees.

Life and Disability Insurance

Group Term life Insurance with an accidental death and dismemberment benefit provides $25,000 coverage. The Legislature pays the total premium for full-time employees and part-time employees pay premiums based on the total hours of work. For disability insurance, the Legislature offers a Group Long Term Disability Insurance Plan that provides a monthly benefit of 60 percent of covered monthly earnings after an elimination period of 360 days. The Legislature pays the total premium.

Retirement

Participation in the Florida Retirement System is compulsory for all salaried staff, except certain re-employed retirees. New employees have until the end of the eighth month following their first month of employment to select a retirement plan, from the traditional pension plan or the investment plan. New employees will receive an informational packet approximately two months after the hire date. Members and staff contribute 3% of their salary towards retirement and the Legislature pays the remainder of the premium

Florida Pre-Tax Plan and Deferred Compensation Plan

This state sponsored program includes Supplemental Insurance Plans, Health Savings Account (when enrolled with an Investor Health Plan), and a Flexible Spending Program on a pretax basis. The Supplemental Insurance Plans include hospitalization, cancer/intensive care, dental, vision, and accidental/disability. The Flexible Spending Program includes healthcare and dependent care accounts. A competitive Deferred Compensation Plan is also offered. The State of Florida Deferred Compensation Plan offers a number of investment options including variable annuities, mutual funds, and a bank, with a variety of contract providers.
