Schedule/Hours: MONDAY - FRIDAY, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, SATURDAYS REQUIRED (40 hours/week)

This position is responsible for:

Manages the day-to-day operations of a single Thrift Store, including staffing, facilities, and processes related to donation intake, donation processing, donation pricing, donation presentation for final sale, and point of sale; schedules staff, employees and volunteers to ensure all store functions are adequately covered during all operational periods for the primary purpose of generating significant weekly, monthly, and annual profits; evaluates the production needs of the store and ensures that product flows through the donation intake processes to the point of sale in a timely manner to maximize store profits; oversees and manages product to eliminate stale stock while constantly generating new stock in tandem with minimizing the amount of time it takes to process donations to the sales floor for final sale; ensures the successful operation of the Thrift Store program within the boundaries set forth by The Salvation Army in its established policies, minutes, and best practices which is measured by consistent ongoing profits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers and monitors the day-to-day operations of a small Thrift Store; serves as lead worker to volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel; trains and instruct staff in the proper methods and procedures for performing work; inspects work in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness; conducts and/or reviews performance evaluations for staff; makes hiring/firing recommendations to Corps Officer.

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and evaluates work of Store Clerks, Sorting Room Workers, and other employees of the Thrift Store; instructs and trains employees in the proper methods and procedures; monitors work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with established store policies and procedures; assists employees in resolving operational or personnel problems; evaluates employees performance and recommends disciplinary action when necessary.

  • Ensures the store has sufficient staffing to cash out customers; prepares and balances the cash drawer and runs routine register printouts to investigate errors and overages/shortages; prepares and delivers bank deposits; ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records in accordance with established operating procedures.

  • Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; manages, documents, and follows up on donor and customer-related grievances and recommendations; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.

  • Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area, may assist with hauling donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.

  • Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customers have handled.

  • Ensure that the store is opened and closed in accordance with Salvation Army established policies, procedures, and best practices.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

  • Ability to perform mathematical computations and count change.

  • Ability to operate a cash register.

  • Ability to perform frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting or operating a vehicle.

  • Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light objects (less than 25 lbs.).

  • Work is performed in a normal store environment where there is little, or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.

  • High School diploma or G.E.D., AND

  • Three years progressively responsible experience working in a retail store environment with at least one year experience in a supervisory capacity, OR

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses & Certifications:

Valid State Driver's License Required with ability to meet Salvation Army driving requirements for insurance purposes and remain qualified to drive a Salvation Army vehicle throughout the course of employment in this position.
