A high school guidance counselor provides academic, career, and personal/social support to students. This position will help students navigate their coursework, prepare for graduation, plan for college or vocational careers, and manage emotional or social challenges. You will collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to foster student success. Advise students on course selection, class changes, and meeting graduation requirements. Monitor academic progress and develop strategies for students struggling with coursework or time management. Aid in constructing master class schedules and organizing orientations for incoming students.
Guide students through the post-secondary planning process, including exploring career paths, vocational training, and college options. Assist with college applications, personal statements, financial aid, and scholarship navigation. Coordinate standardized testing and write professional recommendation letters for admissions. Provide individual and group counseling to help students deal with stress, anxiety, depression, and family issues. Facilitate conflict resolution, peer mediation, and social-emotional development. Offer crisis intervention for emergencies and connect students with outside mental health professionals or community resources.

A school-based threat assessment role?typically held by a Threat Management Coordinator or part of a multidisciplinary team?is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and managing potential safety threats. The position investigates concerning behaviors, conducts student risk screenings, and coordinates interventions to ensure a secure and supportive campus environment. Proactively identify and monitor individuals?such as students, former students, or outsiders?who exhibit threatening or concerning behaviors. Assess the severity and credibility of a threat alongside a team of school administrators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement. Develop, implement, and track individualized mitigation strategies, behavior management plans, and mental health interventions. Train district employees, staff, and law enforcement on threat management protocols, tracking systems, and early-warning signs. Strong crisis intervention abilities, conflict resolution, understanding of behavioral patterns, and ability to bridge communication across multiple agencies.
The job frequently requires leading or working within a localized, multidisciplinary threat team. Typically lead the team, manage discipline, and enforce plans. School psychologists or social workers who advise on clinical risks, counseling, and interventions. School Resource Officers (SROs) who handle criminal history checks and law enforcement interventions.
