Public Safety Communications Specialist (Dispatcher)

This position is within the Florida State University department of Public Safety .
Responsibilities
Dispatching law enforcement officers and other public safety services to the scene of an emergency. Answering, receiving, transferring, and dispatching functions related to 911, emergency, and non-emergency calls for service. Monitors public safety radio system, fire and security alarms, personal safety applications, and access control systems. Position utilizes and operates police radio base station and portable radio system, Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center computer terminal, telephone and radio recorder system, emergency notification alerting systems and telephone equipment.
Maintains radio communication w/all police officers, sworn administrative personnel and investigators through use of various radio equipment and computer software applications. Implements and assists with the coordination of special and emergency procedures of units responding to emergency situations.
Monitors fire and security alarms, access control systems, personal safety applications and Closed-Circuit Camera systems including license plate readers. Operates the Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center teletype terminal, and the requests from those Information Centers via computer network terminals for criminal information needed by law enforcement personnel in the field.
Support members of the University community and general public in a manner consistent with departmental policy and within the normal scope of services rendered by law enforcement communications personnel.
Performs administrative procedures and paperwork required for the successful operation of the Public Safety Operations Center and the coordination of the departmental field activity.
Assess operational readiness of various software and systems, take necessary action or make appropriate notifications as needed.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

Considerations
This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.
This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check .
Shifts: 12-hour shifts 6:00 am - 6:00 pm, 6:00 pm - 6:00 am, rotating days schedule to include nights, weekends, holidays, and special assignments.
This position is in the FSU Police Department but does not qualify for special risk benefits and classification under applicable retirement or insurance programs.

- 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification to be obtained within 12 months of the hire date per Florida Statute 401.465.
