An 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) teacher is responsible for helping middle school students develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
-Instruction & Lesson Planning
Create lesson plans aligned with state standards and curriculum goals
Teach literature, grammar, vocabulary, writing, and reading comprehension
Introduce students to novels, nonfiction, poetry, essays, and research skills
Teach writing formats such as argumentative, narrative, and informative essays
Differentiate instruction for varying learning levels and accommodations
-Classroom Management
Maintain a structured, respectful classroom environment
Set behavior expectations and enforce school policies
Monitor student participation and engagement
Manage transitions, assignments, and classroom routines
-Assessment & Grading
Design quizzes, tests, essays, and projects
Grade assignments and provide constructive feedback
Track student progress and maintain grade records
Prepare students for state assessments or standardized tests
-Student Support
Help students improve literacy and communication skills
Meet with students individually for extra support
Identify struggling learners and collaborate on intervention plans
Encourage critical thinking, discussion, and independent reading
-Communication
Communicate with parents/guardians about progress or concerns
Participate in parent-teacher conferences
Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and special education staff
-Administrative & Professional Duties
Attend faculty meetings and professional development sessions
Follow district policies and curriculum requirements
Supervise students during hall duty, lunch duty, or school events
Maintain classroom materials and educational technology
